The bulk of the more than $20 million spent in support of Washington state Initiative-1634 – which will block local governments, like Pullman, from imposing taxes on soda, sugary beverages and some food items – has flowed from the pockets of soda giants like Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo, Inc., Red Bull and the makers of Dr. Pepper. That amount of cash – and the misleading adds it has paid for – should give plenty of reason to question the motives of the industry.
